Grief and Rebirth

1. Catherine Gourdier: Breathe Cry Breathe: From Sorrow to Strength in the Aftermath of Sudden, Tragic Loss

Catherine and I had a very touching and stirring interview based on this book, and we liked each other a lot! She enjoyed a successful career as an independent sales agent for sixteen years and later transitioned to the film and television industry, where she is a second assistant director and where she also met her husband. The heartbreaking, sudden, and tragic loss of the three biggest loves of her life, her mom Neta Tuepah, her dad Bill Gourdier, and her youngest sister Julie compelled Catherine to write her new first book titled Breathe Cry Breathe: From Sorrow to Strength in the Aftermath of Sudden, Tragic Loss, which is a terrific read. I truly appreciated learning about the special Olympics, and how Catharine has honored Julie’s memory by becoming active in this incredibly worthy cause.

2. Camille Dan: Aaron’s Energy: An Unexpected Journey Through Grief and the Afterlife With My Brilliant Son and Gathering at the Doorway

Camille’s fascinating journey from skeptic to believer when she heard her son Aaron speaking to her from the Afterlife is a must-read. And I personally relate to her story, because Aaron instructed Camille to spread his message, so she is working with her son across the veil, as I am working with my husband Saul across the veil. I loved this book! And it is very well written! Camille is also the author of Gathering at the Doorway: An Anthology of Signs, Visits, and Messages from the Afterlife. It’s full of incredible stories and experiences that, as we know, show that death is an illusion and that we live on. Each story is a unique story in itself, but there’s a common thread through all of them, which is that people are connecting with their loved ones across the veil, and there’s evidence of it.

3. Jan Warner: Grief by Day: Simple Practices and Daily Guidance for Living with Loss

This very helpful, popular book provides 365 daily reflections, weekly themes, and 52 healing exercises to help its readers make peace with their grief one day at a time. I was especially touched by Jan’s telling me about her recent courageous visit to Ukraine and her experiences with the Ukrainian people whose spirit of celebration and productivity is mixed with trauma and mourning. Very touching and inspiring!

4. Anne-Marie Oomen: As Long as I Know You: The Mom Book

I loved this book, and I loved Anne-Marie. What a fine, wonderful woman. Her incredibly well-written, award-winning book focused on the troubled relationship she had over her lifetime with her mom until her mom entered dementia, and how, as she began to lose her mother, they somehow, in awkward and comic ways, found each other. This is a very touching and at times, funny read. I could easily understand why this is an award-winning book. And Anne-Marie and I “hit it off” during our interview; we had a wonderful rapport!

5. Michele Benyo: No-Problem Parenting™: Raising Your Kiddos With More Confidence and Less Fear

Michele especially touched me during our interview because after Saul transitioned, I became a Founding Board member for an organization that provides peer support for grieving children who have lost parents, grandparents, and siblings. Therefore, Michele’s heartbreaking story of losing her 6-year-old son to cancer, her daughter’s experience growing up after her beloved brother’s death, and how Michele learned to help her daughter through what Michele calls her Good Grief Parenting Approach, is a guide that helps families to journey beyond mourning to experience whole, joy-full lives. Michele and her book are wise and inspiring, and a worthy must-read for parents whose children are suffering from the death of their sibling.

I highly respect Peggy, who is a mother, a teacher, a survivor, a speaker, a leader, a grief coach. She is also an Amazon bestselling author who experienced the unthinkable: the loss of two of her four children, her daughter Courtney by accident in 1991 and her son Connor by suicide in 2018. When I looked at Donna’s photo, I sensed a warm, intelligent, and welcoming person, and that is just what she was like when I interviewed her! Her book and her interview blew me away when I read about the shock of her husband’s suicide, how she struggled, then began to cope step by step, and how she is now brilliantly “paying it forward” by helping other widows. 12. Sue Frederick: Through a Divine Lens: Practices to Quiet Your Ego and Align with Your Soul

Sue Frederick is an inspiration to know, and she is one of the most emotionally honest and authentic people I’ve interviewed. The highlight of this interview for me was how Sue recounted a dream vision in which she was lifted above Earth and showed that the light is always winning no matter how grim things may appear. That inspired me and gave me hope that the chaos we are experiencing on our planet is a “cleaning out” of the toxic messes and better days are ahead! Now I need patience to be able to watch it come to fruition!

In Through a Divine Lens: Practices to Quiet Your Ego and Align with Your Soul, Sue helps us see the hidden wisdom in the painful moments we encounter as inspiring fuel for moving fearlessly through life’s trials and reaching our potential. This is an incredibly enlightening book.

1. Lora De’Vore: Darkness Was My Candle

I’m literally and totally in awe of what Lora endured in her life, and how she healed and transformed, and now she is a successful mental health professional, she is recognized as a leading educator, and she is also a sought-after public speaker. She is a role model for healing from the unthinkable and paying it forward. What an inspiration she is, as is her book!

2. Winnie Chan: Honoring Darkness: Embrace Shadow Work to Nourish and Grow Your Power

What a wise and wonderful person Winnie is! And she is also an effective healer who authentically revealed, through both her book and our interview, the tremendous trauma she endured in her life, how she healed it and how she now admirably inspires others to do the same. Not only does Winnie, who is impressively bright, combine the medical science of a clinically trained acupuncturist with the spiritual knowledge of a shaman to help her clients process their trauma, which is the root cause of many physical and emotional illnesses, but during the interview and in her book she openly talks about her trauma-filled childhood, her 3 suicide attempts, her painful divorce, and the way she healed using what is called “shadow work.” She is an inspiration and a terrific resource for people.

11. Michael Wohl: In Herschel’s Wake

I loved this book! It literally had me laughing out loud at some of the absurdities Michael endured compliments of his eccentric, dysfunctional father who, even in death, was difficult and rogue. And I also loved the theme of eventual forgiveness that came to Michael and his siblings from their experience burying their father together. This introspective, honest, and darkly humorous memoir speaks to grief, forgiveness, and the complexities of human relationships as it shares how Michael grappled with having to travel four thousand miles, overcome four decades of resentment, and reconnect with his estranged siblings so they could bury their enigmatic, eccentric father by themselves, and by hand. I wanted to cry when I read the heartbreaking way Andy took his life and the vow LeAnn made in her bathroom that night. And I wanted to cheer at the inspiring ways LeAnn has turned one of life’s most bitter “lemons” into a sweet lemonade to turn other kids away from suicide.
